Greta Gerwig has been selected to receive this year’s Pioneer of the Year Award. She is the second female director to win this honor after Elizabeth Banks.
On September 25, she will attend the Will Rogers Film Vanguard Foundation’s annual dinner at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
These three films were independently written and directed by Gerwig—— Barbie, lady bird and little woman — was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, while Gerwig himself was nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay Oscars lady birdBest Adapted Screenplay little woman and best adapted screenplay Barbie.
last year, BarbieThe film, which Gerwig co-wrote with Noah Baumbach for Warner Bros., became the first independent female-directed film to gross over $1 billion worldwide.
The Annual Pioneer Awards are a more than 75-year tradition that recognizes outstanding leadership, service to the community and commitment to philanthropy in the motion picture industry.
All proceeds raised from the September Gala will be donated to the Will Rogers Pioneer Assistance Fund, a charity that provides financial assistance and supportive counseling to individuals in the film distribution and exhibition community in times of need.
“Greta Gerwig is a dynamic filmmaker with a remarkable vision who entertains and inspires audiences around the world,” said Jeff, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. and co-chair of this year’s Vanguard Dinner. Goldstein said. Kyle Davis, president of Bleecker Street Distribution and chairman of the Pioneer Assistance Fund, echoed those sentiments.
Gerwig’s early acting credits include indie classics Hannah takes the stairswhich she co-wrote, and evenings and weekends, which she co-directed, co-wrote and co-produced. Her breakthrough role came in Baumbach’s film Greenbergfollowed by Baumbach’s Francis Ha (The two are married). Most recently, Gerwig starred in Baumbach’s film white noise Next up, we’ll see him starring opposite George Clooney and Adam Sandler in his upcoming untitled film.
She is also currently writing an adaptation of CS Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia Netflix book series.
