Android users participating in the pilot program can now add their California driver’s license to Google Wallet. The Mobile Driver’s License program, currently open to 1.5 million Californians, previously only allowed digital IDs to be used in the state’s “CA DMV Wallet” app for iOS and Android.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement yesterday: “Saving digital driver’s licenses and ID cards has never been easier in California, and the state will continue to work hard to provide services for those who choose to participate in the mobile driver’s license program. Providing convenience, the experience of using Google Wallet is now optional.
California announced earlier this month that it would soon also allow the use of Apple Wallet digital ID cards. According to the California DMV website, pilot personnel will still need to carry physical IDs, while law enforcement, state agencies and businesses have not yet accepted digital IDs outside of “select retail stores and TSA airports.”
