Google is going all-in on artificial intelligence capabilities for Android devices and may add a new file summarization tool to the list.
Sleuths from Android Authority and 9to5Google dug into the code of the upcoming beta and discovered a feature that provides AI summaries for documents saved in the Google Docs app. For now, the feature may be scrapped or reserved for later release, but the two outlets spotted the artificial intelligence excerpt in the documents being actively developed.
Pixel 9 series, Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel Watch 3 announce 5 new AI features
Google leverages the power of generative AI to crawl and summarize large amounts of text through AI snippets in search. The feature, called “Artificial Intelligence Overview,” has long been plagued by inaccuracies and hallucinations, partly due to the quality of the information it scraped from the web. However, it is possible to achieve greater success by performing summarization tasks on user-created files that are likely to be reliable.
Mix and match speed of light
A glimpse of the code shows that Google’s artificial intelligence model will search within text files and provide a brief description of each file. This way, users looking for a specific file can scan the document summary without opening it.
It is believed that Gemini Nano, the smallest and lightest version of Gemini, will support this feature. This means that the function will be handled on the device rather than in the cloud. Evidence in the code also suggests that this feature can be turned on or off in Settings.
If you’re feeling AI fatigue… don’t expect relief anytime soon. Mashable’s Alex Perry said in his review that the newly released Google Pixel 9 has “too much official artificial intelligence.” “Google is too difficult ”
That said, Perry found some of the features actually useful, such as the ability to search for screenshots. It sounds like AI summarization of files might fall into Humble, but truly useful category. But we’ll have to wait and see.
