God of War Ragnarok has finally been released on Steam, though it received a mixed rating on Steam, yes (mostly) due to PSN requirements.
I think it’s clear now that a lot of PC gamers do want to play PlayStation games, they just want to play them on PC. In turn, I also think it’s obvious that these players don’t want to go through any hassle in order to play these games, other than the usual, still-annoying ones like paying for said video games. Yet here we are again, PlayStation has released another first-party game on Steam, and players immediately realized they needed to connect to a PSN account to play it. Infamously, Hellraiser 2 was bombarded with harsh censorship earlier this year for its decision to require players to link a PSN account to the game, although this decision was later reversed.

For online gaming, the PSN account argument may be somewhat understandable when factoring in things like cross-save, but for single-player gaming, it’s a bit like a door-to-door salesman trying to get A horse whips someone else. Even so, God of War Ragnarok finally launched on PC on Friday, and yes, connecting a PSN account is a requirement, so players did what they seem to be doing all the time these days, which was review-bombed the game.
It’s worth noting that these aren’t actually all negative reviews, as many of them point to numerous issues with the game, such as crashes, visual glitches, and stuttering. PlayStation has a history of releasing PC ports, so this isn’t a surprise.
It’s unclear whether Sony will change its mind about PSN requirements, as it has yet to change its strategic approach to all PC games. But hey, it’s Steam Deck verified, so at least you can hear Kratos say “boy” on the go? I guess?
