The bad news is, we’ll have to wait a long time to see Will Trent’s third season.
The show will return midseason, which means fans will have to wait Very More of their favorite agent and his Chihuahua companion in late 2024 or even early 2025.
But the good news is that patience will definitely pay off, thanks to a great addition to one of the most talented and likable casts on television.
Deadline reports today that Gina Rodriguez (no relation to eponymous star Ramon Rodriguez) will be joining the cast as a series regular.
Gina previously captivated audiences with her starring roles in Jane the Virgin and Not Dead, but sadly the show was short-lived, with the show being canceled in May after two seasons on ABC.
According to Deadline , Rodriguez will “play Marion Alba, a charismatic and confident assistant district attorney new to Atlanta.”
In light-hearted classic style, circumstances will force the two to work together despite their initial dislike of each other.
The report continues: “After her first meeting with Will goes awry, the two are surprised to find they must work together to investigate the crimes of Atlanta’s gang world.”
Of course, Will already has a complicated relationship with Angie (Erica Christensen), so will the addition of Rodriguez lead to a love triangle situation?
On other shows, this might all feel a little too familiar, too trope-y, but so far Will Trent has done a great job of subverting our expectations and offering something a little different.
In a TV landscape that isn’t overflowing with creativity, “Trent” has been a welcome breath of fresh air over its first two seasons.
That’s one reason why news of the show’s extended hiatus prompted a collective sigh of anger from viewers.
But hey, if showrunners Karin Slaughter, Liz Heldens and Daniel T. Thompson can use this as an opportunity to further hone the We agree on the strengths of ABC’s most exciting series.
The addition of Gina Rodriguez is a great sign—it shows that both producers and the network are pulling out all the stops to make Will Trent season 3 its strongest yet.
