After Game of Thrones ended, author George R.R. Martin and showrunner Ryan Condal co-created the prequel spin-off House of the Dragon. While Martin has been very complimentary of the show in the past, he clearly has some issues that need to be addressed… just not right now.
In a new post on his official website, Martin wrote, “This has not been a great year for anyone… I’ve had a pretty unfortunate year, filled with stress, anger, conflict And fail…I don’t look forward to the other posts I need to write, about all the issues with House of the Dragon…but I need to do that too, but today is Zozobra’s day.
The festival Martin is referring to is an annual event in Santa Fe, New Mexico, that seeks to combat darkness and sadness by burning Zozobra in effigy. It’s not easy to pinpoint Martin’s apparent problems with his show. As recently as the fourth episode of Season 2, Martin praised House of the Dragon’s Dragon Wars as one of the best movies ever made.
As for House of the Dragon itself, HBO has renewed the show for a third season. Additionally, Condal revealed that House of the Dragon will likely end after Season 4, rather than the five-year plan originally discussed for the series. Season 3 will likely premiere in 2026.
