Google is updating the Gemini writing tools in Gmail to help you polish the drafts you’ve already written. Google said in a blog post that you can now click “Retouch” to polish your emails, in addition to other “Write for Me” options powered by Gemini, such as “Formalize” and “Elaborate.” . The company has also added shortcuts that appear in the body of emails on Android and iOS to make it more obvious that an AI writing tool is available.
These tools are available to users who purchase a Google One AI Premium account or purchase the Google Workspace Gemini add-on. If that’s you, when you open an empty draft, you’ll see a “Write for me” shortcut that you can click to provide you with Gemini draft text. Once you have 12 or more words in your draft (whether written by AI or not), you should see a new “Improve My Draft” shortcut in gray letters below the words.
Slide your thumb over the text and you’ll be able to choose to polish, formalize, detail or shorten it, or have Gemini write an entirely new draft for you. (If the “Improve My Draft” shortcut doesn’t appear, clicking the pencil icon will do the same thing.)
