It’s been a while since there’s been a new main series Borderlands game, but Gearbox head Randy Pitchford believes fans will be “very, very happy” with the next game.
The last time we entered the world of Borderlands was in 2022, with Borderlands New Stories and, of course, the spin-off Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, which featured more of the series’ classic shoot-and-loot gameplay. Fantasy. But as far as the main series is concerned, it’s been five years since 2019’s Borderlands 3 without a new game. So this begs the question: Where might a hypothetical Borderlands 4 be located? This was mentioned on a developer’s LinkedIn last year, but there hasn’t been any official announcement.

Now, in a recent interview with GamesRadar, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford said fans won’t have to wait that long before they announce what’s next for the Borderlands world. “I’m not perfectly hiding the fact that we’re doing a lot of things, and we’re doing big things,” Pitchford said. “I’m confident that when we’re ready to announce our next video game project, our fans will be very, very happy about it. And I’ll tell you, we’re not going to make people wait a long time before we announce it.”
Pitchford also teased that an announcement about the upcoming Borderlands movie follow-up could come “before the end of the year. We’ll see. Maybe sooner.” He went on to say, “I have all the time. The biggest, best team and we know that’s what our fans want from us – so I’m very, very excited and I can’t wait to talk about it and I wish I could gush about it right now because we have a lot to talk about. Want to say!
Those who enjoyed Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands may also have something to look forward to, with Pitchford explaining that Gearbox “achieved greater success with the first Wonderlands game than we did with the first Borderlands game.” The results, so it’s something we can continue to develop and like fantasy, it gives us a place to create within the context.
The next installment of Borderlands will obviously be this film, which will be released in a few weeks, on August 8th in the UK and August 9th in the US.
