Life was good and the two were happy, but when Lilia received the news that her parents had died in a car accident thousands of miles away, her world collapsed. Lilia and Bill return home to Tunisia, where Lilia’s mind is filled with a question she can’t answer: Has she let her parents down by not being with them all these years?
Tunisia to Sydney It was Merriam’s brainchild and included the main character Lilia, the death of her parents, the olive tree, and Merriam’s real-life experiences trying to smuggle something in an airport. Christian did the heavy lifting in developing the first draft.
The two creators said they have no plans Tunisia to Sydney Delve too deeply into themes of trauma and therapy, but when they touch on personal fears, this is what it turns out to be.
“We are increasingly worried about losing our parents, especially since we have both lived overseas for a long time, now in New York, while our parents are as far away as Tunisia, France and Australia,” the pair said. “How would we respond to this, and more importantly, how guilty would we feel if we missed their final moments?”
It was through writing this story that they began to find some answers to their “deep fears about the fragility of life and the bond between parent and child.”
While art therapy for trauma often involves drawing family trees for better expression, these two creators chose not to go that route and instead had a more personal discussion, such as asking themselves what they would do if they lost a parent, or anyone for that matter. How will you feel?
“We discussed this at length a few years ago when Christian was writing his first comic book series, resurrectorwhich raises the idea that how you deal with death determines who you become,” the pair noted.
This isn’t the first time Christian and Merriam have collaborated; house of cracks Merriam has been working behind the scenes as editor of Christian Stories. The creators admit that the biggest obstacle to this collaboration was finding the time to sit down and talk. While the two sometimes clashed over issues like dialogue and scene structure, they “thought we did a really good job and now we have this wonderful book and we’re incredibly proud of it.”
Grief and loss are things that people inevitably go through at some point in their lives, and Merriam and Christian offer some advice for those who may be going through similar experiences, citing the power of art to help people cope. Anxiety and fear of losing their loved ones.
“We sincerely feel that the writing process helped us deal with these anxieties, and we would recommend other creators take a similar journey and engage in artistic endeavors to deal with trauma or any real anxieties,” the pair said.
“We also hope our stories show readers that they are not alone in their grief, which affects each and every one of us. There is no right way to deal with grief, you have to be gentle and forgiving with yourself and others, just like we As the main character learns at the end of the book, she blames herself and falls into a deep depression after experiencing grief over the death of her parents,” they said. “One of our friends and former comic book collaborator, J Schiek, recently posted that an old friend of his passed away while he was reading Tunisia to SydneyLilia’s journey helped him understand that dealing with grief is realizing that letting go of regrets can open the door to profound growth, forgiveness, and peace. We really hope that other readers facing similar problems can find even a small amount of comfort in our stories.
