Francis Ford Coppola on his transformation into the dystopian science fiction film genre Megacity Reflects his utopian aspirations for the world.
“This is a Roman epic, what can I say? It’s a deep exploration of a world where there’s more to it than there should be. It’s about loyalty, of course, but ultimately it’s a vision of hope.
Coppola cites Adam Driver’s Cesar’s desire to build a new utopian dream city in New York City as his inspiration Metropolis. “Humanity has always had a great vision and the ability to rise to any challenge and create a beautiful world for ourselves and our children. This is a film full of hope,” Coppola said.
Critics were divided after Metropolis’ world premiere in Cannes, with some praising Coppola’s bold masterpiece, others questioning its existence, and not many in the middle.

The film, part political drama, part sci-fi thriller, part love story, part comedy, is the result of Coppola’s plundering of historical records from ancient Rome and modern New York City, the director said.
Coppola took creative liberties with the characters and events. “What if you said that crazy thing, or that weird thing? I can tell you where I got it from. I’m not making it up,” he argued.
The Toronto Film Festival runs until September 15th.
