Former NBA Street developer is looking to do what EA won’t do – create a spiritual successor to a fan favorite at a new studio

EA’s former NBA Street developer has split from the video game giant to form his own studio and create a spiritual successor to the beloved basketball game. The game, called “The Run: Got Next,” will be developed at the new Play by Play Studios. The game itself will be released on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2025.

Mike Young, co-founder of Play by Play Studios and former creative director of Madden, talked about the attitude of game developers towards “NBA Street Legacy” in an interview with IGN, “Many of us have worked on NBA Street, and they always wanted me to think For a company that has a game as big as Madden or NBA Live, it’s difficult to think about a subpar game if you put all your resources into that game.” Yang said.

“I was there when Tiburon Studios brought them back [NFL Blitz]. Some of the stuff I’ve seen in the past, they were just retro games that haven’t evolved into modern games. I don’t think they have staying power, so they have to be launched at a lower price. You might just attract people who like them, and then they’ll play them for a weekend or a few weeks, or take them out every once in a while…”

Young continued: “We think the opportunity is to bring this type of game, which doesn’t necessarily exist now, to Gen Z because it’s a social game. Play with friends, play against friends. We’re trying to adapt to what simulation games don’t have Give us a mode like Superstar KO and we want to make what can be the best version of the game possible.

It’s been a while since we’ve had a truly exciting basketball game like NBA Streets. This is the kind of game we haven’t seen properly loved in a while – and let’s be honest, the younger generations simply don’t get to experience it! Hope The Run, made with Unreal Engine 5, does well!
