A Star Wars movie hasn’t been released in theaters in nearly five years, but that’s set to change in 2026, when The Mandalorian and Grogu is released just in time for the franchise’s 49th anniversary. At D23, fans discovered that production has begun on the film, with the first footage being shown to audiences.
Since the movie was only shot for a few weeks, there isn’t much to show off. Lucasfilm kicked off the show with the first meeting between Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and Grogu in the first episode of The Mandalorian. From there, we see their further adventures, which include a confrontation with the AT-ATs.
Grogu still left the filming to his dad, but they also spent some quiet time together and drank some soup. Zeb from Rebels also appears briefly. Additionally, Grogu was seen on a ship with Babu Fick’s race, and Snowtroopers also showed up.
The film will take place after The Mandalorian’s third season, with Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin officially adopting Grogu as his son while training him to become part of Mandalorian culture.
The film is directed by Jon Favreau and will be released on May 22, 2026. Other highlights of the first day include the announcement of Toy Story 5 and the name reveal of Avatar 3.
