Talking about Will Eisnerthere are two texts above the rest, for reasons or incorrect. The first one is A contract with GodEisner introduces Eisner’s seminal graphic novel Riff on the lens of the Jewish community in New York City. The second one is for pulp Spiritwhich one John Law Prefabricated. I read the latter story from the collection of hardcover books that my local library once owned. I still really like the traditional black Denny Colt and the gang’s story with the mysterious octopus.
But for my money, the best Spirit The story is a low-key personal story. What I always think of is the person who believes that he can fly. There we see a man falling down in his luck and decide to prove that he can fly by jumping off the city’s tallest skyscraper. And, to his surprise, he could. Unfortunately, this spirit is in the middle of a gunfight in the area, and poor Schmuck is collaterally damaged.
I’m asking this reason because of John Law. Mainly, one can see a lot of things that will become the spirit through the perspective of this long-unprinted work. Of course, this is the original story as Eisner and Gary Chaloner Work with the role. But even without the paper, the first story is obvious, with Eisner Spirit,sand.
The similarities between the two comics are obvious, so it is pointless to talk about all of them. But I think what is crucial is the core difference. Mainly, John Law feels a little too straightforward. This spirit makes him a compelling character. John Law is just another cop, but has a patch for the eye.
That’s not to say that Eisner or Chaloner’s work is terrible. Eisner’s digital work is immediately cartoonish, and astonishingly, Chaloner’s use of the panel is suitable for a man who was personally approved by Eisner to continue a forgotten history. Titan Comics’ works restore these comics. Especially the shadow works are indeed worth watching.
But, at the same time, you can feel that this is not abandoned. Maybe you will find an angle. Things that can make your work more consistent with the second draft Spirit Even Eisner’s novel wishes A contract with God. But we don’t live in that world. So while not bad, the series is still more important to scholars than to the average comic audience.
