I have mixed feelings about this episode tower of god. On the one hand, this episode features one of our supporting characters, Horyang, and fully showcases his backstory, giving him a lot of needed development. Not only do we learn the origins of his powers, but also his tragic past as an orphan who was used as a test subject for human-demon fusion.
This is exactly what Team Bam has needed for a while. We’re nine episodes in now and we know next to nothing about these characters. The extent of their power, their history, and even their motivations remain largely a mystery. The idea that they’d been traveling together for years but never made it public seemed crazy. But then again, maybe they’ve already left the screen, in which case the recent time jump deprived us of a lot of important information.
Despite being well-received, that doesn’t change the fact that Huo Yang’s story is a bit predictable and cliche, the whole setting of testing experimental children with only a young woman being kind to them is far from so new, and there’s the bit of an estranged pseudo-brother with mirror powers. However, while the backstory is simple and easy to understand, Huo Yang’s actions are not.
Although the entire team was eager to help Huo Yang find his friend, Huo Yang decided to go find him alone in the middle of the night. However, his stated motivations don’t actually make sense. There’s nothing to directly indicate that Cassano would be dangerous – he used Huo Yang’s pseudonym as his own, a clear sign that he was trying to leave a trail for Huo Yang. However, even if he does have reservations for some reason, taking Bam with him at least seems like a smart move.
But while Huoyang’s reason for going alone is a bit confusing, it makes perfect sense for Bam to take it at face value. Bam is in constant fear of his old and new friends. Their association with him put their lives in danger. Horyang doesn’t want to put his friends (i.e. the rest of the team) in danger because of his own personal baggage, something that resonates deeply with Bam. Therefore, it is completely in line with Bam’s personality to hide Huo Yang’s departure from the rest of the crew. This is one of the negative things Bam learned from his new FUG allies – how to lie and keep secrets – and something tells me Ho Yang might end up paying the price for this new character flaw.
