This is probably the best episode of the season so far, and while that’s not saying much considering what happened before, I’ll take what I can get. This episode marked a definite turn in the direction of things, with the U-20 team finally catching up thanks to their development. With Sae and Ryusei dominating the field now, you can feel a lot of pain from some of the U-20 regulars, but as long as results are achieved, beggars can’t be choosers. What I love about this episode is that it shows the dynamic between Sae and Ryusei; one is made up of pure logical analysis and the other is made up of pure animal and arguably sexual instincts. I swear to God, there’s a scene where this guy has an orgasm directly after scoring a goal, and I’m not sure the show wants me to take that seriously.
Blue Lock team members have to compromise to keep up, which could be a fun way to flesh out more characters on the field. I feel bad for Niko and Chigiri because they are decisive players in the team but you don’t always get to choose the situation of the game itself. Now we have the gentle, cold Hiori and our favorite rich kid Reo on stage, showing that just because some star players are replaced, doesn’t mean they can’t be creative. We replace speed with passing possibilities, and explicit readings of the field with imitated defensive strategies. It’s cool that, despite the popularity of the animation, the way everything is presented visually highlights the upgrade in the show’s style. Is it enough to prevail, or do we have to replace more players?
