Epic is continuing its mobile store gamble on free games, promising up to 50 apps this “holiday”

Epic Games is still developing its own mobile storefront and will continue its free-to-play program there whenever it launches.

Fortress Heroes developer Epic Games has been running its own digital storefront for PC games since 2018, though there have certainly been some obstacles along the way. It doesn’t have some key features, including ones you’d consider simple like wishlists, but it’s generally functional at the moment. However, over the years, in an effort to get more players to join, Epic has been giving away a new free game every week, and occasionally some pretty big games. Now, Epic appears to be trying this again with its mobile storefront, according to mobilegamer.biz.

Speaking at a roundtable at Unreal Fest this week, Epic Games Store general manager Steve Allison explained: “The free games program will launch in Q4. [first] As third-party apps come along, we’ll have something great for players, and it’ll be great for developers because it will help us scale quickly. The program app is ready for this “holiday season” (that’s pretty uncertain scope, Epic).

Allison also explained that the range comes from the fact that there are still “issues implementing payment solutions, so some of that may be pushed to the next couple of months,” which feels like it needs to be done at the last minute thing, but hey.

Back in August, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said that free-to-play games actually work well, even if not all games are “good investments,” so we’ll have to see if its mobile store is a good investment.

Last month, Epic laid off about 900 employees, or about 16% of its workforce, just days after Fortress Heroes’ sixth anniversary (and shortly after V-Bucks prices increased).
