New York Comic Con has arrived beat I attended a breakfast meeting hosted by Crunchyroll to kick off the event. Held at Legacy Records, a beautiful restaurant with an inviting retro aesthetic, breakfast includes the most delicious and thinnest croissants ever, a pear and cheese danish, and a variety of coffees, mimosas, parfaits and Fruit salad.
But the real draw is Crunchyroll’s presentation and accompanying merchandise displays, which are just as impressive as the pastries.
Executive Vice President, Emerging Business Terry Li and screen talent producers Liu Tian It kicked off with a short video showcasing various anime shorts. The film declares in bold letters that anime is here to stay. Later, Li and Lyu showed the global animation industry expenditure chart from 2018 to 2025.
Beyond the charts, Li and Lyu also highlight that anime is booming, some of which can be attributed to famous celebrity fans, such as Megan Thee Stallion, Noah Lyles, logicand Michael B. Jordan.
Anime today is as diverse as its fans. Crunchyroll’s demographics show that 52% of the audience is male, 46% is female, and 0.9% is non-binary. About 70% of anime fans are between the ages of 13 and 34.
As the presentation and discussion came to a close, Li and Lyu said that subtitled and dubbed anime content is now available in more than 12 languages and is accessible through Crunchyroll in more than 200 countries. It truly became a global pop culture phenomenon.
Finally, they showcase exclusive New York Comic Con merchandise to fans, collectors, and archivists via the Crunchyroll store. Attendees will then receive goody bags filled with random Crunchyroll loot.
There was even a brief appearance of a banana cat mascot that made its way through the restaurant. The event is less than a block from the Javits Center, so it’s easy to get to the venue to start your first day at NYCC.
