The financial research company Teikoku Database released the 2023 animation production industry report on August 27, stating that the value of the animation production industry in 2023 (based on 317 companies) will be 339.02 billion yen (approximately US$2.36 billion), an increase of 22.9% from 2023. The Imperial Database predicts that by 2024, the value of the animation production industry will remain at around 340 billion yen (approximately US$2.36 billion).
Among 301 animation production companies, 75 companies (24.9%) experienced less revenue than the previous year. While 112 companies (37.2%) reported revenue growth, 114 companies (37.9%) were profitable. Imperial Database previously reported that 39.8% of animation production companies suffered losses in 2021, which was the highest ever recorded by Imperial Database.
The average sales of animation production companies in 2023 will be 1.123 billion yen (approximately US$7.79 million). The average sales of a single company fell in 2021, but rose again in 2022, with 2023 being the year with the highest average sales in the past two years.
Average sales for studios focused on outsourced and prime contract work were 2.363 billion yen (approximately $16.4 million), an increase from 1.722 billion yen (approximately $11.9 million) last year. The proportion of companies with sales growth was 43.8%, and the proportion of companies with sales decline was 33%.
For professional studios that subcontract animation works, the average sales in 2023 were 391 million yen (approximately US$2.71 million).
Empire Database pointed out that the stability of TV animation production, the growth of animation production on streaming platforms, and the popularity of theatrical animation are the reasons for the growth of the industry in 2023.
Among the 317 animation production companies interviewed, 101 companies had revenues of less than 100 million yen. In addition, 79 companies reported revenue of less than 300 million yen, 37 companies reported revenue of less than 500 million yen, of which 43 companies reported revenue of less than 1 billion yen, and 57 companies reported revenue of more than 1 billion yen. Of the 317 companies interviewed, 93 companies have five or fewer employees, 98 companies have fewer than 20 employees, 60 companies have fewer than 50 employees, and 38 companies have fewer than 100 employees. , 28 companies have more than 100 employees.
Divided by decade, 116 companies were established in the 2010s (2010-2019), 90 companies were established in the 2000s, 39 companies were established in the 1990s, 28 companies were established in the 1980s, 27 companies were established in the 1970s, 11 companies were established in the 1960s, and 6 companies were established in the 1960s.
