Well, the 2024 Emmy nominations were announced this morning, and as usual, there were some nice surprises (yes for Selena Gomez!) and some disturbing snubs (there is nothing For the curse?
Although many shows have had their seasons cut short due to strikes, it’s been an excellent year for television and the Academy has plenty to choose from.
So there’s really no reason to complain about this year’s nominees, especially with top dramas like “Bear” and “Shogun” getting their due.
But hey – complaining is fun, so join us as we discuss the most unexpected decisions of the year!
Snubbed: Family’s Kelsey Grammer
If there’s any star that voters can’t wait to cheer for, it’s Kelsey Grammer.
The man who brought Frasier Crane to life won six Emmys during his career and was nominated an astonishing 18 times.

So it was a surprise that he was left out of this year’s competition.
Maybe the reboot craze is finally starting to die down, or perhaps Grammer is no longer a darling of the academy now that he’s become more outspoken about his conservative political views.
Regardless, there won’t be a seventh statue of the Good Doctor this year.
Surprise: Selena Gomez of Murder in the Building fame
But the other side of the coin is an A-list star who just received her first acting Emmy nomination!
Murder in the Building has been a hit on Hulu for several seasons, but last year, Steve Martin was the only actor to receive Academy recognition.
This year, he co-stars with Martin Short and Gomez.
Selena has been nominated as one of the show’s executive producers in the past, but this is the first time her saucy performance as Mabel Morra has been recognized, making her the fourth person to be nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress Latina women.
She’ll be competing against Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, Jean Smart, Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig, but as they say, it’s an honor to be nominated!
Snubbed: Emma Stone’s “Curse”
Now, Showtime’s Cursed isn’t your typical awards bait.
But after winning the Best Actress Oscar for “Poor Things,” Stone seems likely to at least get a nomination for her hilarious performance opposite Nathan Fielder.

Alas, Stone was left out of this year’s Emmys.
But with two Oscar statuettes at home, she probably won’t cry herself to sleep over this one.
Double snub: John Mulaney’s Everybody’s in L.A. and The Bear
Beloved comedian John Mulaney shut out two Possible categories this year:
He is widely expected to gain recognition for his Netflix variety show Everybody’s in L.A.
Many also predicted that the comedian would receive acting recognition for his performance in the memorable episode “Fish” from Bears Season 2.
Like Stone, Mulaney isn’t hurt by the praise these days, but this double snub is still a bit disappointing.
Speaking of “Bear,” the show didn’t suffer too much in terms of nominations.
Surprise: Bear sets new record
Bears Season 3 may have received mixed reviews, but the show second The season was almost universally praised.
Yet even after a full year of rave reviews, the show’s unprecedented success at the Emmys remains the biggest surprise.
Folks, Carmy and company just set a new record with 23 nominations, the most once For comedy!

Now, there’s some debate over whether the “Chicago” series – which tends to go to some very dark places – can be properly classified as a comedy.
But most of its episodes are in the 30-minute range, and there are plenty of humorous moments provided by brothers Cousin Richie and Fak – so at least for now, that’s the extent of it.
That’s no surprise, as the FX period drama was the most critically acclaimed series of the year and benefited from the absence of last year’s hit series “Succession,” “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us.”
But that’s not to take anything away from Shogun, it’s a series that’s impressive in every way and deserves every award it gets.
