If you thought the battle between Brazil and X (and its owner Elon Musk) was about to end without one last hurdle, you were sadly mistaken.
It started a few weeks ago, when Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered X to remove what Moraes believed was misinformation and fake news on the site. Musk rejected the court’s request, and Brazil responded with a nationwide ban on the social media platform. Just last week, Musk quietly decided to do as requested, delete the account that sparked the issue and appoint a state legal representative, according to the New York Times.
Mix and match speed of light
Elon Musk’s X is losing users in the US, UK and EU. X’s own data proves this.
X allegedly asked Brazil to lift the ban if it complied with it, but the site has not yet been launched in Brazil. Reuters reported that on Friday, the country’s Supreme Court said that if X wants to resume services in the country, it will need to pay an additional $5 million in fines.
X did not immediately respond to Mashable’s request for comment, but “a person close to X” told Reuters the social media platform may pay the fine.
