PC gaming seems to be as popular as ever, with Steam just setting a new concurrent user record.
I feel like every time I leave Steam for five minutes, it sets a new record for the number of simultaneous players. Valve broke concurrent user records (more than once) at the beginning of the year, with more than 33 million users online at the same time. In March, that number climbed all the way to 36 million, then again to 37 million in August, and now, less than an hour ago at the time of writing, Steam managed to hit a concurrent user record of 38,367,277, which is a Very strong numbers for the video game distribution platform (via SteamDB). It should be noted that this does not mean that more than 38 million people are playing the game at the same time, but that it refers to the number of people logged in at the same time.

Still, it’s a clear sign that PC gaming is becoming more and more of a thing, especially in this day and age where console makers are trying to sell us $700 consoles for crisper-looking backgrounds model, and most people wouldn’t think twice about it. It’s unclear why anyone wanted to play some video games on this random weekend in September (although the weather here in the UK is getting a bit gray again), but I’m sure it doesn’t matter to Valve.
Things also seem to be going well for Valve at the moment, with its latest game Deadlock still doing well on Steam. The game’s player count peaked at 171,490 earlier this month, and nearly 150,000 people are currently playing, so Valve is likely to find more continued success.
