During its Investor Day event, video game publisher EA revealed some interesting data about its Star Wars game. While many believe Star Wars is currently at an all-time low, post-Acolyte, EA has released numbers that prove the brand is still popular. As long as Lucasfilm doesn’t get too involved.
EA revealed that net profits from all of its games totaled $5 billion (which includes older games as well as microtransactions in games like Battlefront). Interestingly, EA said that Star Wars games will have a combined net profit of $3 billion in 2021, meaning sales of Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor plus sales of older games alone will An additional $2 billion has been added over the past three years.
Fallen Order and Survivor have more than 40 million players combined (EA doesn’t provide detailed numbers for each game individually, but we do know that Fallen Order has sold at least 200,000+ copies to date, and that’s in 2021 , so total sales now are probably in the range of 25-30 million copies, while Survivor probably has 10-15 million copies)! While that may not be on the level of GTA V, which has sold 65 million copies since its launch 11 years ago, it’s still a very good number, and indeed, these numbers are great. Most games will never sell that many copies. EA also revealed that Fallen Order has continued to sell well, selling about as much as the original in the years after its initial release, which is unusual as most games don’t continue to maintain a large number of sales in the years after release. sales volume. EA also said that although the launch of “Survivor” on PC encountered many technical problems, sales still exceeded expectations. Survivor will also soon be available for older generation consoles. That could boost sales again.
The third and final Jedi game is being produced by Respawn (which was previously confirmed, but reiterated again during the event). But the release date is not expected to be earlier than 2026.
Considering that Lucasfilm of course gets royalties and minimum guarantees from EA, that means EA is making a lot of money for them despite all the problems they’re having with Star Wars. While my personal opinion of Fallen Order and Survivor isn’t as positive as most, it’s nice to see EA’s single-player games doing so well without microtransactions; the company has claimed that single-player games are on the way out ( and famously turned Battlefront II into an online casino of sorts), only to be ultimately proven wrong by Fallen Order and Survivor. In fact, it’s games-as-a-service and new multiplayer games that are really in trouble, costing publishers hundreds of millions of dollars this year alone (Suicide Squad and Concord are among the biggest flops of all time) .
EA hasn’t revealed anything about a potential Battlefront III game. It’s unclear what the future holds for EA’s Star Wars after the release of the third Jedi Knight game. But with numbers like these, one might think that EA might want to release more Star Wars (single-player) games after the Jedi game trilogy ends.
