A third Dune movie is in the works, but if you ask Denis Villeneuve, his take on the sci-fi classic “doesn’t feel like a trilogy.”
Dune director Denis Villeneuve is currently writing the third film, which will be based on the second book in the Messiah series. Despite being the third film, the director does not consider them a trilogy. Villeneuve recently appeared on Vanity Fair’s Oscars Podcast, where he talked about the Dune movies and his future plans for the franchise. “First of all, it’s important for people to understand that, for me, this is really a diptych,” Villeneuve said of his two “Dune” films.

“It’s actually two movies based on the first book. It’s done, it’s done. If I do a third one, which is in the process of being written, it won’t feel like a trilogy. It’s a weird thing to say, But if I were to go back there, I would do something that felt different and had its own identity.
One big thing to consider with Messiah is that the book takes place 12 years after the first one, and the movie has a very young cast, like Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya , which could be problematic – although Villeneuve said “I know how to do it” when asked about aging the cast, he didn’t offer any hints as to what he meant.
You also shouldn’t expect the director to direct any other films after “Messiah” because he feels he’s ready to move on from those films. “Listen, if Dune: Messiah happens, I’m going to be spending a lot of years on Arrakis, and I’d love to do other things. I think for me, making sure that during Messiah, there are projects In the seeds, if someone wants to do something else, because they are more difficult to adapt to, they become more and more esoteric, but I won’t close the door.
Considering Dune 2 grossed over $700 million at the box office this year, another movie might be a safe bet, but in the movie business, anything can go wrong. You won’t be short of content for the live-action Dune, though, as the prequel series Prophecy is set to launch later this year and received its first trailer in May.
