DSTLRY is raising funds, game beat Reported: Total $7.4 million, including $5 million in new funding.
As we’ve reported for a long time, DSTLRY is run by ex-Comixology David Steinberg and Chip Mosherand has been releasing a series of beautiful books by top talent – and best of all Somner has won Eisner Award Won the award for Best New Series at SDCC a few weeks ago.
According to GamesBeat (an article clearly not written by AI because AI has better grammar), the $5 million in seed funding will be used for additional content deals and expanding DSTRY’s digital marketplace, where fans can purchase and Selling digital editions and collectibles.
This round of financing was led by Game Venture Capital 1 am gamewhose previous investments include Dorian, DreamCraft, and the interestingly named Octopus Panic, among others. Founder and Managing Partner of 1AM Gregory Milken Will join the DSTLRY Board of Directors.
DSTLRY’s previous investors include Kodansha America, Groupe Delcourt, John Shappert, Mike Wolhouseand producer Lorenzo di Bonaventuraas we have Has been reported here in the past.
“We are excited to partner with Dstlry, a company that embodies innovation and creative excellence,” Milken said in a statement. “David Steinberg and Chip Mosher are creative geniuses who are not only pioneers in technology, but have also redefined the comics and digital collectibles industries. They have an uncanny ability to spot new opportunities in technology and entertainment. A new frontier that empowers the most important storytellers and enriches fan experiences. We can’t wait to see how they further develop this space.
Vorhaus, who is already a member of DSTLRY’s advisory board, added: “Given today’s hostile funding environment, it is almost unheard of for a new startup to receive such a large amount of funding. However, Dstlry overcame these difficulties and raised 5 million during this period. The USD financing proves their unique value proposition and industry-leading innovation. As far as I know, this is the only startup that has completed such a large-scale financing during the artificial intelligence boom and whose core business is not artificial intelligence.
Indeed, investing in something not related to artificial intelligence would have been unthinkable just a few months ago, but now looks prudent. In an interview with GamesBeat, Steinberg scoffed at the idea of using artificial intelligence for DSTLRY. “I do think there is some experimentation. But honestly, I think all artificial intelligence will bring a higher value to verifying real artifacts. We know that our creators live and breathe them and create them through Make money. I think artificial intelligence has a lot of great tools at your disposal, and they all have great uses, but I think making comic books is a personal, human thing.
While artificial intelligence won’t be at the core of DSTLRY, this round of funding does highlight that the publisher is also a “very high-quality comics and collectibles company with a market for collectible digital comics.” As we’ve pointed out in the past you’re not going to make $5 million publishing a regular old comic book – at least not right away, and DSTLRY has been making collectibles to go with their (very good) comic content. Betsy Cloonan, Tula Lotay, Jock, Brian Azzarello, Eduardo Rizzo There is more.
DSTLRY is also looking into the possibility of digital collectibles DSTLRY Remarks and DSTLRY Proof system. These were announced before Comic-Con and I guess I missed it in the excitement.

DSTLRY Proof’s first application will be getting the highly anticipated Mominu x Somna Art Toy, a limited edition vinyl designer art toy colorway created by a renowned artist Junko Mizuno. Mominu x Somna features metallic paint and glow-in-the-dark candles. The features were launched at SDCC, and were a success…but, it’s worth noting, so were the actual comics, which were selling briskly. Regardless of the bells and whistles, DSTRY seems determined to put authentic content created by real people at the core of its business, and we’re all for that.
