Parker was initially determined to fulfill his patriotic obligations, but gradually realized that he was not suitable for a military career. He just wanted to complete his military service, return to civilian life, and pursue his dream of becoming an artist. In telling this story, he shows how Vietnam was the last war in which the United States had a draft; how the draft affected service members; and how we as Americans view war and how our soldiers feel after they retire.
