Double Fine’s Psychonauts 2 documentary PsychOdyssey has just aired its final episode, concluding the game’s years-long journey.
Back in 2023, beloved indie developer Double Fine released a 32-part series covering the entire development of Psychonauts 2, the long-awaited sequel to the PS2/Xbox original. It follows the development of the game from the beginning, and I mean when they were just throwing ideas out the window, giving a very unique perspective on the trials and tribulations of game development that you can’t get almost anywhere else. . Now, Double Fine has released the final episode of Odyssey of the Mind, chronicling what happened after the game’s launch, including reflections on some of the series’ more dramatic moments.

The development phase of Psychonauts 2 was rocky. Double Fine launched a crowdfunding campaign in 2016 through Fig, a crowdfunding platform dedicated to video games, specifically allowing backers to receive a share of future revenue from future projects (the company was dissolved in 2023). It wasn’t actually released until 2021, but it actually received pretty positive reviews – Ty gave the VG247 perfect scores in his review upon release.

Double Fine was also apparently acquired by Microsoft in 2019, another big change for a company that has been completely independent since its inception. The developer hasn’t released or announced any other games since Psychonauts 2, but it still hosts regular Double Fine Presents livestreams showcasing other cool indie games. That puts it in a questionable position, especially considering Microsoft’s layoffs earlier this year and the closure of studios like Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin.
If you really want to dive into the development of Psychonauts 2, though, you can watch the entire series on YouTube – or you can pick up the just-announced Blu-ray set, which will run the game later this year via Limited release.
