The first trailer for the animated adaptation of Junji Ito’s Uzumaki has been released, and it looks like it might be one of the best interpretations of his work yet.
Among all Ito’s works, there are two that can be regarded as his most representative works. One of them is Tomie, which tells the story of an immortal woman who makes people fall in love with her. The other one, of course, is The Swirl , a series about a small town overcome by… well, a spiral! I promise, this is scarier than it sounds. In fact, this classic comic has been adapted into a live-action movie as early as 2000, and has also been adapted into some video games, but has never been adapted into animation. Technically, that’s still the case as it hasn’t been released yet, but after years of waiting, the first trailer for the series was finally released at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con, confirming that it will be releasing this coming September 28 airs on Adult Swim’s Toonami today.

You can check out the first trailer for the series above, which is mostly just a compilation of ominous, occasionally spiral-filled shots, but its first look is intense. You’ll quickly notice that the series has opted for an entirely black and white look, which is rare in anime adaptations, but for something like Uzumaki, I can’t think of a better creative choice. Of course, color can add a lot to some adaptations, but Ito’s work is particularly striking because it’s in black and white, and seeing that realized in animated form makes this a very exciting series to watch, even if Ignore how classic it is.

One drawback is that you won’t get much since it’s only a four-episode miniseries, but it still has some strong flair. Hiroshi Nagahama (Mushi-shi) serves as director of the show at Studio Drive and Studio Akatsuki, but it also has another surprising staff member: Hereditary and Menu composer Colin Stetson (Colin Stetson) is scoring the show.
Uzumaki will air weekly on Toonami starting September 28, but will also be available on Max the day after each episode airs.
