Wish Apple would do something more adventurous? Maybe a MacBook that’s all screen and turns into a giant 18.8-inch monitor? We’ve got bad news for you: That probably won’t happen anytime soon.
Apple expert Ming-Chi Kuo said the release of the device has been delayed from the first half of 2026 to the end of 2027 or even 2028.
This is so far into the future that one has to wonder if such a gadget will ever appear. But Kuo does have some information about the device, and it does sound like Apple is working on it. For example, he claimed that Apple has abandoned the larger 20.25-inch design in favor of an 18.8-inch display size. He also said that the recent delays were due to “technical challenges with displays and mechanics.”

Over the years, we’ve heard numerous reports that a foldable iPad and/or foldable MacBook (in fact, the two devices could be the same device) are in the works. The Information reported in February that Apple was developing multiple foldable devices, including a foldable iPad and a foldable iPhone. In March this year, Kuo Ming-chi said that the device “is expected to enter mass production in 2027.” Analyst Jeff Pu said in May that a 20.3-inch foldable hybrid device will enter mass production by the end of 2025.
As for the device specs beyond display size, not much is known yet. It’s essentially a giant touchscreen when unfolded (think a very large iPad or a touchscreen display), and a laptop when partially folded, with the bottom of the display used as a keyboard. Such laptops do exist — especially with Lenovo’s attempts to create similar products — but they haven’t gained significant traction yet.
M4 MacBook Pro: All the rumors and leaks about the next Apple laptop
If this latest report is true, then all previous rumors were overly optimistic. The foldable iPad/MacBook hybrid may have its moment one day, but that moment may be three years or more away.
