Actor Donald Glover says the Star Wars franchise can sometimes be “too serious.” Glover played Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story and will return to play the character in a new movie. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Glover was asked what he wanted to incorporate into his plans for a new Lando, and he said, “I just want to make it fun.”
Glover said it’s understandable that many of today’s entertainment shows, including the Star Wars franchise, are “serious” in nature due to the world-view. But he thinks Star Wars can be too serious, and he hopes to change that with his new Lando movie.
“As a Star Wars fan, I think it’s important to have fun,” he said (via IGN). “It’s hard to have fun right now. It’s hard because very serious things are going on and these are the only things that connect us, weirdly. So I understand why things are serious, but I believe that the human experience Part of it is that we have a responsibility to enjoy it, but I just feel like we’re lacking in that area.
“Star Wars, I love it, but sometimes it’s very serious. Sometimes it’s too serious,” he added. “Everything with Skywalker is so serious. Lando, I think the best part about him is that he’s a villain. I think people can relate to that and he might say, ‘Man, this war is like I need Money, I think everybody can relate to that, I just want to make Star Wars fun.
Glover was originally planning to develop a Lando TV series for Disney+. However, it has now been turned into a feature film that he is creating with his brother Stephen Glover.
Donald Glover discussed the film earlier this year, saying part of the reason he signed on was because he was given control. He said this level of control allowed him to have a “single” vision for the project.
“I feel like I have enough control. Maybe you’ll be painted as a control freak, but like, yes, control can make a vision singular,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “If the vision is singular, people will want it more. The less singular it is, the less people will want it because they feel they can do it. Look, we live in an age where anyone can create anything. . You go to TikTok and there’s almost every type of stuff, there’s documentaries, there’s puppets, there’s yarn stop-motion animation, so why would you want to watch something that you feel like you could make?
The standalone Lando movie appears to be in its early stages, with no word yet on casting (aside from Glover as Lando), director, or release date. Either way, this is one of several new Star Wars movies in the works, along with a film that will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey and another movie from Logan director James Mangold . The Mandalorian’s Dave Filoni and Taika Waititi are also working on a new Star Wars movie.
The first of these is scheduled to be released in May 2026 and is rumored to be the “Rey” movie directed by Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. This will be the first new Star Wars movie since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
