Disney’s mobile gacha game featuring Kermit the Frog as the banjo-wielding swamp king is shutting down

Did you know Disney created a mobile gacha game? It turns out the company has already made several, but one of them will soon be hanging out with Bambi’s mom and Captain Barbossa, as the Disney Mirror Universe is closing. The game has been removed from the mobile store, microtransaction sales have been discontinued, and the game will be offline on December 16th.

The news was released yesterday on the game’s official website, Discord server, and other official platforms. An official statement explains that the game’s final update will wrap up its story, which is a glimmer of hope for those who have invested a lot of time (and money) in the game.

“We sincerely thank you, our amazing community of players, for making this journey unforgettable,” senior community manager Kabam Pinwheel wrote. “Your support and passionate dedication to the game truly inspires our team. Being able to create this game and develop beloved characters and worlds in new and imaginative ways has been a labor of love and our of honor.

Games like these are always a big deal for the player communities that invest in them. As a baseline, the shutdown of all online gaming is a sad thing for players, but for fans of instant services and gacha games, it’s especially devastating due to the huge amount of cash invested.

For what it’s worth, Mirror Universe looks pretty cool. Various Disney characters can interact with each other, and the RPG gameplay seems unique enough to keep players interested. Perhaps the most immediately interesting part is the character design, as the art team clearly had some fun with the characters they added to the game over time. Take Kermit, a bardic warrior who uses his banjo to bash enemies around him. To be sure, it takes some effort.

For those who still own the game, they’ll be able to experience its dying moments over the next few weeks. The game has a few YouTube channels dedicated to the game that are still uploading content, so I’m sure you can watch the finale through them. Frankly, I know very little about the Mirror Universe narrative, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some kind of tragic tearjerker. Go out with a bang, whether literally – like Final Fantasy XIV – or figuratively.
