In files for determining which tunes should be considered for best original song Oscar for Disney’s upcoming animated musical moana 2the company could have chosen any number of high-quality options for the soundtrack, however, hollywood reporter It is understood that the studio only submitted two songs: “Beyond” and “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?”

Both songs have music and lyrics by Abigail Barlow and emily bear. “Beyond,” which also includes music written and arranged by Pacific Chorale Obadiah’s donationessentially a version of the first film Moana‘s “How Far I’ll Go” (the only song submitted for the 2016 film that was ultimately nominated). “Beyond” is Disney’s classic “I Want” theme song, sung by the actress who plays the protagonist in the film. Ollie Cravalho (beside Rachel House in the 2024 movie). Meanwhile, “Can I Have a Chihu?” is essentially a version of the first film Moana’s “You’re Welcome,” as it’s a fun comic relief song performed by the actor who plays the protagonist’s adventurer sidekick, Dwayne Johnson.

Why did Disney only focus on these two songs? The studio isn’t talking, but given recent Oscar history, one can read between the lines.

Over the years, Disney has submitted much of the music from every animated musical, so why not? Validity: 1989 little mermaid received two nominations, including the eventual winner; 1991s beauty and the Beast Nominated three times, including the eventual winner; 1992 Aladdin received two nominations, including the eventual winner; and 2007’s Obsessed Received three nominations. But then resistance arose because every nominated song from these four films had a common composer: The Great Alan Menken.

Some in the film music community began lobbying for a rule change that would prevent the Academy from giving so much attention to any particular film or songwriter. In June 2008, this resulted in a policy known informally as the “Menken Rule”: a policy stating that no more than three songs from any one film could be submitted; No more than two songs from any film may be shortlisted; no more than two songs (regardless of author) may be included in any film.

From that point on, Disney apparently worried that submitting multiple songs per film would be counterproductive and began submitting just one song, even for big musical blockbusters like 2013 freezing (winner for “Let It Go”) and the original Moana. But when that approach backfired with 2021 plans, the studio was forced to reconsider the approach. charm. In this case, the studio submitted before the soundtrack was released, entering “Dos Oruguitas,” a very nice Spanish-language song instead of the one also written by Lin-Manuel Miranda“We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” became a huge cultural phenomenon. “Dos Oruguitas” ended up being nominated, but “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” might have won if it had qualified. As a result, in recent years, studios have returned to a middle ground when it comes to submissions.

In fact, both Barlow and Bell’s submissions could moana 2“Beyond” and “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?” were finally nominated? This is certainly possible. But this would make moana 2 This is the second film to be nominated for the award multiple times since la la land Eight seasons before, eight seasons after Barbie That’s what was done last season.

moana 2 Will be released on November 27th.
