It has been 42 years since “Tron” premiered, and 14 years since “Tron: Legacy” was released. The third installment, Tron: Ares, has been in the works for several years. But at D23, Disney is finally ready to share the first look at the next chapter in the series.
Jared Leto plays the protagonist Ares, a program that comes from the Grid and enters the real world. Leto attended the preview alongside Greta Lee, Evan Peters and original Tron star Jeff Bridges. Peters will play Julian Dillinger, a character that may be related to Ed Dillinger, played by David Warner in the first film. Cillian Murphy plays Dillinger’s son Edward Dillinger Jr. in “Tron: Legacy.”
Peters’ character is featured prominently in the trailer, with Dillinger delivering a keynote speech about the coming of intelligent life and the imminent arrival of artificial intelligence programs in our world. Bridges appears to be airing a show based on Kevin Flynn, a character from the first two movies. Lee told viewers that her character Eve Kim is a programmer who may have paved the way for Ares to enter the real world.
After the footage ended, an elaborate laser display revealed that Nine Inch Nails would be providing the soundtrack for the film.
“TRON” will be released on October 10, 2025. “Avatar 3” was officially named, details of “Toy Story 5” were revealed, the first trailer of “Star Wars: The Skeleton Key” was released, and then “The Mandalorian” and “Grogu” also made their debuts. Marvel is also in on the action, with a look at the Human Torch’s Fantastic Four costume, as well as footage from Daredevil: Rebirth and Ironheart.
