Disney and Epic Games are still developing their big old Metaverse together, but one thing you can’t count on is Mickey Mouse running around with a gun.
Earlier this year, House of Mouse invested $1.5 billion in Epic with the aim of creating a “persistent universe” tied to Fortnite, though it’s no surprise we haven’t seen the results of that effort just yet . Many of Disney’s IPs have appeared in the battle royale game, such as numerous Star Wars characters and more recently The Incredibles, but this massive metaverse project is still quite some time away. The Verge recently spoke with Epic Games executive vice president Saxs Persson about the upcoming project, and one of the most interesting points was about the limitations of using certain IPs in a game as technically violent as Fortress Heroes.

Speaking about the skins in Fortress Heroes, Persson explained: “Not every outfit can do everything. [Lego] The minifigure does not hold a gun. Brands should be able to enforce brand guidelines until they are satisfied that the brand is associated with a specific rating. In a battle royale version, having Mickey holding a gun of any kind (cartoon or not) just doesn’t look good.
Persson went on to explain, “There are IPs that are not teen IPs or mature IPs. They are E-IPs for everyone.” Both “The Incredibles” movies are rated PG, which is allowed under certain circumstances. Carrying guns, so I guess that’s above board – and Marvel has a lot of skins, all of which can hold guns, but Marvel is more aimed at teenagers and up anyway.
At the end of the interview, Persson expressed his excitement, saying, “This is one of those partnerships you can only hope for. This is what Disney is all about, this is what both companies are investing in to create something that every Something every Disney fan wants. Well, I don’t agree with that, because there are almost certainly people out there who want to walk around like Mickey Mouse, shoot 13-year-olds, and yell at you more than you can handle. But hey, you can’t please everyone!
