director Todd Phillips A sequel to his film is about to be released clown. Movie, Clown: Folie à Deuxsees the return of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), who committed a crime in the previous film and is now awaiting trial in a mental hospital. In this new story, he meets Lee Quinzel (Lady Gaga), the whole thing feels like a dark and twisted musical. The screenplay written by Phillips is Scott SilverBut he talked about how movie stars became key collaborators in the rewriting process.
In a recent interview with Variety , Phillips said his goal with the sequel was to “feel like it was made by crazy people. The inmates were running the asylum. It seems the director’s wishes were partly there. It came from star Joaquin Phoenix, who threw out the script on a whim and met with Phillips and co-star Lady Gaga in the trailer to rewrite the entire scene from scratch.
Gaga recently told Vanity Fair magazine, “We would see each other a lot on Joaquin’s trailers, and sometimes we would tear up the script and start over. It was a really cool, liberating process.
Phillips confirmed Gaga’s story, explaining:
“My view of Joaquin is that he’s the tunnel at the end of the light. You think, ‘Okay, this scene works, let’s just go and shoot it. “Joaquin says, ‘No, no, no, let’s have a quick meeting and talk about it.’ Three hours later, you’re rewriting it on a napkin.” The great thing about Lady Gaga is that while we’re tearing things up in the trailer, she really has her own style off camera (she probably just learned this the night before), but also in front of it. This is no small feat.
“She placed herself around very powerful people,” Phillips later said of his heroine. “I mean, Bradley Cooperwalked out of the door opposite him. Opposite is Adam Driver [in House of Gucci]he is a beast, Joaquin is a beast. She was in it—she was all in.
