Denmark picks up Magnus von Horn’s period drama girl holding needle As a 2025 Oscar nominee for Best International Film.
The film is set in Copenhagen in 1919 and stars Vic Carmen Sonne (holiday, Godland) stars as Caroline, a young seamstress who finds herself in trouble when her wealthy lover (Joachim Felstrup) gets her pregnant but refuses to marry her. When Caroline finds herself unemployed and pregnant, she has two terrible choices: give herself an abortion with a knitting needle, or work with a shady backstreet adoption agency.

The film received strong critical acclaim – THR‘s review called it a “dark, urgent Danish drama” that “builds to a devastating climax that’s as taut as piano wire” – and the timely themes should make girl holding needle A strong international feature film contender.
Mubi acquired the film through a cross-regional deal from the Cannes Film Festival and owns girl holding needle Across North America, UK-Ireland, Latin America, Germany, Austria, Italy, Turkey and India.
Denmark has long had a strong presence at the Oscars, with 14 nominations and four Oscar wins, most recently for Thomas Vinterberg another round 2021.
The submission deadline for the 96th Academy Awards is November 14, 2024. Will be held on Sunday March 2.
