The excellent iOS Delta emulator is about to get even better: According to Delta developer Riley Testut, the app will soon support online multiplayer in Nintendo DS games. Testut’s post about the feature includes a video Mario Kart DS Two people competing on an emulator immediately took me back to playing the game on my own DS years ago.
Nintendo shut down the DS’s online service back in 2014, so we asked Testut how the online service would work. “It is based on melonDS online support and can be connected to third-party Nintendo [Wi-Fi Connection] Servers (e.g. Kaeru, Wimmfi, AltWFC, etc.),” says Testut edge. “This means that over 10 million Delta users will be able to connect to other Delta users as well as users on real devices using these third-party Nintendo WFC servers.”
However, “this also means that it is currently limited to Nintendo DS games, but all Nintendo DS games with Nintendo WFC are supported,” Testut said. The Delta team does not plan to host its own servers, so online multiplayer will be free for everyone to use.
You might have to wait a while before trying online multiplayer for yourself. Testut said the feature will first roll out in a Delta beta for Patreon subscribers. “We don’t have a public release date yet,” Testut said. While disappointing, it means you have plenty of time to get some Mario Kart DS Practice on.
