Dead Rising Deluxe Remastered Downgrades Camera Mechanic’s “Erotic” Rating

Dead Rising: Deluxe Remastered aims to be the definitive version of 2006’s stone-cold classic, and it’s a smart remaster both in terms of what’s added to the game and what’s retained. However, the entire game has undergone some changes involving the removal of content – the most notable of which is the omission of the camera mechanic.

As Frank West tells everyone, Frank West is a photojournalist photographing the chaos of Willamette’s zombie-infested shopping mall, as well as rescuing survivors, eradicating the mentally ill, and uncovering the truth behind the epidemic. The truth is an important part of his story. However, the camera mechanics get one major tweak in the Deluxe Remastered version that’s sure to piss some people off.

In the original version of the game and its nearly identical 2016 re-release, photos taken by Frank can trigger one of several photo categories – Brutal, Drama, Outdoor, Horror, and Erotica.

Each photo is categorized based on its content, so a photo of a zombie’s head exploding would be labeled as the “Brutal” genre, while a beautiful moment of humanity between two survivors might trigger the “Drama” genre.

According to Famitsu (and verified by VG247), in the deluxe remake, the erotica category has been removed. In the original game, this was reserved for photos of sexual content, and was usually triggered by female zombies with their clothes torn or survivors wearing provocative outfits or poses. While many of the photo opportunities, poses, and costumes remain the same or similar, photos taken that would have triggered erotic genres in the original version of the game will not do so in the Deluxe Remastered Edition.

Dead Rising is about to turn 20 – needless to say, in that time attitudes towards such content in games have changed significantly. As far as we know, the removal won’t have any material impact on the game or gameplay – for the record, this version is better than ever. But this change will be a major differentiating factor between versions – and is sure to spark a heated and exhausting debate about appropriate changes in a remaster.

We’ve reached out to Capcom for comment on these changes and will update this article if we hear back.

Dead Rising: Deluxe Remastered was released on September 19th for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
