DC has released an ad for its new line of compact comics, some of the company’s most popular comics, in portable 5.5-inch x 8.5-inch sizes for just $9.99 each. have a look:
Look, look at that? I love how this ad suggests how to spend a comfortable camping trip. Read Batman: Hush By the light of the lantern. Look how much fun they have together and laugh while reading the story of Bruce Wayne’s jealous childhood friend turned vengeful serial killer. “Relationship goals” indeed!
But seriously, this is a great idea. Measuring just one inch taller than a regular comic book volume, the new series avoids the bulkiness of traditional graphic novels, which are often printed in the size of paper magazines that cannot be folded. Even better, these little books contain overall Their storylines, rather than the multi-volume format of a trade paperback or even a regular comic series. Unlike most comics, each volume will remain in full color but be printed on paper with a slightly lower gloss than the average $20+ graphic novel.
The reduced size allows you to easily carry all 12 issues of Alan Moore watchman It accompanies you wherever you go, allowing you to reference Rorschach blots and Dr. Manhattan’s world-weary monologues in any social setting you like. Spending a day at the beach? “I dropped the pretense and became who I am, without fear, weakness or desire!” Going to church with your family on Sunday? “They claim they labor to build a paradise, but their paradise is full of horrors!” You’ll be popular.

If these books sell well, perhaps DC will become less squeamish about resurrecting its massive backlog of out-of-print titles, and even end up publishing storylines it previously deemed unsuitable for collection. Or what about a print-on-demand version of its less-than-flattering arc? Regardless of what the company decides, some changes will need to be made in the distribution and publishing of comics, and this looks to be a step in the right direction.
