As I compiled my five recommendations for this week’s comic book buying list for January 15th, I was struck by how many DC Comics releases were in the running. Eventually, I landed on new god and question as my two choices, but I could easily include at least two other calendars (those are unknown challenger and Green Lantern: Shattered Spectrum). I think this all speaks to publishers taking huge risks while also delving into the continuity of their shared universe. It’s working.
But, of course, DC isn’t the only publisher putting out strong single issues this week, there are plenty of other books that I love as well. I did the hard work of narrowing it down to a final five list, which you can find below, along with the usual set of release lists…enjoy!
The most worth buying comics on January 15th
FMML#3
writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
artist: david lopez
Colorist: Chris Peter
Writer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: dark horse comics
As wildfires approach Portland, Riley’s band, STFU, encounters unexpected challenges. Riley’s transformation complicates their audition for HeavyFest, leading Lydia to “help” with her heavy metal… trombone. Meanwhile, as Patty prepares for an upcoming interview at True Crime Con LIVE about a book that’s yet to be written, she unknowingly gets closer to a grim mystery. When a corpse turns up at the witch’s house, secrets may be revealed. Listen to a narrative filled with dark humor and suspense, where every note and clue draws us deeper into the chaos.
Why it’s cool: This fantasy comic continues to tell you an interesting family story in 2025 in a magical and realistic way, taking place in a fashionable enclave in Portland. I really enjoyed the characters in this book, things like the monsters fit seamlessly into the world here, as well as the storyline between mother and child. There really is no other book like this one. Oh, the artwork is great.
price: $4.99
New Gods #2
writer: Ram V.
artist: Evan Cagle and Jesse Lonergan
Colorist: Francisco Sega
Writer: Tom Napolitano
Publisher: DC Comics
Mister Miracle finds himself at a crossroads. His brother Orion presents him with a terrifying choice, and he must decide to either venture out to save a child he has never met – a new theophany – or stay home and raise his own. At the same time, evil forces driven mad by their obsession with the dead god awaken and set their sights on the child. As the child’s latent powers begin to reveal themselves to the world, multiple forces of good and evil converge upon him. As these dramas unfold on Earth, the forces of interstellar judgment draw ever closer.
Why it’s cool: In short, this book is absolutely stunning, both in its art and its ambition as a story. It’s epic in scope, like a book about new god should. It also features guest pages from some of the most interesting artists in comics (the previous issue was Jorge Funes, This time it is Jesse Lonergan). This is my first pick on my January 15th comic buying list this week.
price: $3.99
Night #12
writer: Wyatt Kennedy
artist: Luigi Formisano
Colorist: Francesco Segala and Gloria Martinelli
Writer: Maria Letizia Mirabella
Editor/Executive Story Editor: Alana Fox
Publisher: Image comics
Stop joking. No more teasing. No more misdirection. Gray’s fate is finally revealed. An old enemy reappears, wreaking unbelievable carnage and no one is safe. It’s the end of everything you’ve known and the beginning of something new. This is an issue with such serious consequences that we need more pages devoted to it! Everything comes to a head in the status quo-changing season finale. Goodbye, San Pedro. Hello, doomsday.
Why it’s cool: This issue is the oversized second chapter finale to a book that has quietly become one of the most eclectic and stylish comics working today. It’s a heavy action comic that really seems to have had some big effects on people night status quo
price: $4.99
Question: Always at Watchtower #3
writer: Alex Segura
artist: Cian Twomey
Colorist: Romulo Fajardo Jr.
Writer: Dave Sharp
Publisher: DC Comics
As the mystery above the JL Watchtower deepens, the Questioner, struggling through two brutal battles, must overcome self-doubt to uncover the core of a mystery that threatens not just her, but the entire Justice League. But, far away from home and the support system she’s built in Gotham, can Renee rely on the team she’s built around her to avert disaster? What does this mystery have to do with the atomic project?
Why it’s cool: Writer Alex Segura is a best-selling crime/noir author, and that really shines through in this new miniseries starring The Question, who investigates the new JL A mystery on Watchtower. This issue gives us a full introduction to the opponent (and who) she’s up against, and it’s a very interesting reveal. There’s also a lot of continuity here with other strong DC books, e.g. unknown challenger and Atomic Project.
price: $3.99
Ultimate Wolverine #1
writer: Chris Condon
artist: Alessandro Cappuccio
Colorist: Brian Valenza
Writer: Corey Pettit

From rising star Chris Condon (TEXAS BLOOD) and MOON KNIGHT powerhouse artist Alessandro Cappuccio comes the story of the ultimate Wolverine! To maintain control of the Creator’s corner of the world, three members of his council – Sorcerer, Colossus, and Omega Red – deploy their deadliest asset: the Winter Soldier! But who is the weapon behind the mask?
Why it’s cool: This is an absolutely brutal Wolverine comic that expands the scope of the excellent New Ultimates universe. It looks great and reads like raging rage. Don’t miss this book.
