Bunn discussed the new comic and event with The Beat.
DEANNA DESTITO: Why did you choose Outland and Kickstarter to make these games?
Cullen Bunn: I’ve known the great people at Outland for some time now, and I’ve always liked their approach to publishing. I love them creating essays, comics, role-playing games, board games, and more. I love that they are open to all kinds of stories. I like their agility. A while ago I started running their Outer Shadows horror imprint. We publish anthologies like this sword in shadow same as novella Yi and comics like this distance. However, I’ve always wanted to create a series of comics inspired by my love of B-horror movies. That line ended up being turned into these three one-off comics. I love Outland and am as excited about this project as I am.
destiny: Can you tell us a little about each book?
Bunn: Absolutely! With these three books, I really wanted to explore different horror subgenres and styles.
window, illustrated as Louai Gavan (Color by Paul Little and letters Shannon Potraz), is a strange horror story about a mother and her two sons who move into a small house after a family upheaval. They discover that one of the house’s windows looks out onto an alien world filled with terrifying creatures. As they look out, other creatures are looking in!
LONG PIG & AZRAEL, Illustration: Emmanuel Casaros (Color by Paul Little and letters Shannon Potraz), is a “horror on the road” story about an unlucky guy named “Long Pig”. He hitchhikes along dusty, deserted roads, always looking for a warm meal… to feed to his fellow demon Azrael.
Duel to the death with the chainsaw witch, illustration Diogo Carvalhotells the story of three heavy metal heroines who are hunting down demons they unleashed at a rock festival.
destiny: How was it working with each of the creative teams?
Bunn: It’s an absolute joy. One of my favorite things about comics is the collaborative process. I love the different approach each artist takes to my script. I enjoyed the interaction. With these three books, I really wanted to get the different art styles that best represented the different stories, and I think I succeeded! Each artist gives their story their own unique personal touch. Picking the right artist for each project is difficult, but I love how it all comes together!
destiny: Why do you like working in the horror genre?
Bunn: For me, writing horror movies is therapeutic. I was able to face and resolve my personal fears. No, I’m not afraid of being devoured by a demon on the highway, but I do feel uneasy meeting strangers. I may not live in a house with aliens outside, but I feel terrified that my life has been turned upside down and don’t know what to do next. I haven’t battled my demons at concerts, but I have always struggled with the mistakes I’ve made and the impact they have (on me and others).
destiny: Horror is not a single thing, there are many types of horror. What is your favorite?
Bunn: Oh, there are so many varieties, I like almost all of them! If you were to ask me to pick a favorite, it would probably be somewhere between action/horror and folk horror. Of the two, folk horror (especially with a touch of cosmic horror) would take the top spot!
destiny: Is there anything you can tease for supporters?
Bunn: Each of these comics is a complete story on its own, so (if you get all three) you’ll be able to jump straight into three different worlds! We have some really fun bonus levels, including a “gore” level where I personally sprinkle the “blood” to make each book completely unique! Along the way, we’ve also got some cool surprises lined up for the update. I can’t express enough how grateful I am to all the people who helped make these three books a reality.
