Upcoming DC animated movies Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part 3 will present the final performance Kevin Conroy As Batman. A scene in the movie’s trailer shows Conroy’s Batman fighting against Mark Hamillclown.
In that scene, Batman says, “I care about the Joker…about Gotham. About justice. And, if it has to end, at least I go out like this…and be Batman!”
The executive producer of Butch Lukic recently spoke with CBM about Conroy recording his final lines as Batman and shared a touching story in the booth.
“Originally, we obviously knew we were going to do this scene with Kevin playing Batman,” Lukic said. “We didn’t know that at the time, and I’m not sure he knew because it was still a year before he died.
“We were joking and saying, ‘This is your last Batman cartoon, blah, blah, blah,’ and he was laughing and joking.”
“In hindsight, it wasn’t his last performance of the character, but it’s a shame it turned out that way. The lines he did were actually only two, but he wanted to stay and do another line.” Just for fun [Laughs].
“He had a great time but we don’t know if he was sick at the time or if it happened later. Unfortunately it wasn’t his last show, but sadly now it is.
He also talked about Mark Hamill returning to play the Joker, saying: “Once we told Hamill…we told him, ‘Look, Kevin is doing this,’ and if Kevin only did a few lines, he always Give us a call.
“He said, ‘As long as Kevin’s doing it, I’m going to give it my all,’ and that was it. Even though he said a few years ago that he was retiring from Joker, he really wanted to do that.
“Again, he had no idea how things turned out for Kevin. He just did it because it would be a good ending to Batman: The Animated Series for both of them.
It’s sad that Conroy has passed away and we’ve lost a legend, but at least we can enjoy one more brief experience hearing him voice Batman one last time.
