Sorry Crash Bandicoot fans, a fifth game seemed to be in the works, but was canceled at some point.
It’s been a bit of a strange time for everyone’s favorite bandicoot in recent years. In 2017, the “Crash Bandicoot N. Sane” trilogy brought this classic PS1 character back to people’s attention and achieved success with a new group of young audiences. This later led to a remake of Crash Bandicoot Racing in 2019, and of course a year later, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time followed by Toys for Bob, the sequel to the original trilogy. Since then, though, things have calmed down a bit. Last year did see the emergence of Crash Team Rumble, a live-service game that ultimately wasn’t very successful and had its last content update in March of this year. But whether there will be a “Crash Bandicoot 5” has always been a question. As it turns out, the answer is that there was once one in development, but it no longer exists.

This is according to Nicholas Kole, a character artist who has worked on games such as Spyro: Reignited Trilogy and, in particular, Crash Bandicoot 4: it’s time”. Sadly, the game codenamed Project Dragon that Kole was developing until recently was canceled, which of course led some fans to wonder if it was related to the purple dragon Spyro. Cole clarified that, no, Dragon Project is not a new Spyro the Dragon (artwork shared later revealed it to be a Minecraft-inspired fantasy game, which honestly looks pretty cute). However, Cole did note in a tweet that it’s a Spyro game and that “one day people will hear about the Crash Bandicoot 5 that never was, and it will be heartbreaking.”

There’s never been any official announcement about Crash Bandicoot 5, and Kole no longer works at Toys for Bob, so take this with a grain of salt just to be safe. The Crash Bandicoot 4 developer did go it alone earlier this year and is now branching out into game production as an independent studio – though it has already signed a deal with Microsoft for its next game (which many fans hope will is a new Spyro the Dragon game, no surprise). Now, we’ll just have to wait and see if anyone can share more information about Schrödinger Crash 5 somewhere down the road.
