The world was struggling to recover on Friday from an overnight global IT outage that caused huge problems for airlines, 911 emergency systems, shipping lines, banks, television broadcasters and many other major industries. While the cause is now clear, conspiracy theorists believe they know the real reason it all happened: In short, they believe Democrats like Barack Obama caused the blackout to piss off Donald Trump general. seriously.
In fact, the outage was caused by new code rolled out by cybersecurity giant CrowdStrike in the early hours of Friday morning, which was causing serious damage on computers running Microsoft Windows. The problem rippled around the world, first ringing alarm bells in Australia because of the simple fact that it was noon on the other side of the world.
But conspiracy theorists on X think they know the “real” reason why it all happened. The most popular theory right now is that this is all part of a plot to disrupt Donald Trump, who delivered a rambling and hate-filled speech last night at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He promised a dramatic change in his tone to unite people following the attempt on his life.
Laura Loomer, a far-right conspiracy theorist who attends the Republican National Committee in Milwaukee and is close to Trump, pushed the bizarre theory on social media Friday in an attempt to connect multiple threads.
“Did you know that the president and chief security officer of CrowdStrike Services served as the Executive Assistant Director of the FBI during the Obama-Biden administration,” Loomer wrote on X on Friday.
Why, Lumer thinks, is this important? This is obviously suspicious because of the power outage”It happened during President Trump’s nomination speech at the Republican National Committee convention. If anyone has ever worked in a Democratic-led administration, they must have opposed Trump in this way. The problem with this theory, or one of many, is that the outage was a very minor problem for a small percentage of users while Trump was speaking, according to Reuters. It will not be until after Trump finishes his speech in the early morning of Friday that global issues will be upgraded to global issues. If the goal was to disrupt Trump’s speech, these planners probably should have started earlier in the day.

But Loomer didn’t leave it there. Her lengthy tweet also attempted to implicate the FBI in some way, ending with the question: “Why every crisis in our country is related to @Barack Obama? Of course, Loomer has long been a conspiracy theorist and failed to take responsibility when her wildly inaccurate tweets inevitably turned out to be wrong. Most recently, Loomer tweeted that President Joe Biden experienced a medical emergency on Air Force One, despite the fact that everything went smoothly for Biden entering and exiting the plane. But that didn’t stop Loomer from continuing to insist he was right, as people like Elon Musk seemed to accept it on social media.
You’ll note that blaming Obama for the outage is tantamount to blaming Biden, considering he was the vice president under the 44th president. Trump infamously helped create the so-called birther conspiracy theory, which falsely claimed that Obama was not born in the United States, which would make him ineligible to be president. Trump’s extreme racism has largely contributed to his hostility toward Obama, who has been a fixture in Trump’s mind for more than a decade. Trump has even become confused in recent months, referring to Obama at least three times at rallies over the past year when he was actually referring to Biden. So it makes sense that Trump-aligned conspiracy theorists remain obsessed with Obama.
Illuminati logo and Sam “Banker Freed”
But it’s not just Obama. Signs of conspiracy are everywhere in the online idiot community, including innocuous hand gestures from newscasters. For example, an account called Concerned Citizen (@BGatesIsaPsycho) tweeted “Sky News presenter does it again…” while posting footage of the Sky News blackout in the UK.

If you don’t know what that account refers to, that’s because you’re normal. The account attempts to point out the newscaster’s hands and the belief that the Illuminati symbols are displayed by people making triangles. In this case, the woman in blue briefly clasped her hands together, which conspiracy theorists believe is a secret hand symbol for some of the global elite.
There is also an account called @prolotario1 whose accusations are broader, encompassing almost every conceivable conspiracy theory from the past five years. You’ve got Ukraine, Joe Biden, and a misspelt guy. Sam “Bankmen Freid” of cryptocurrency company FTX. Of course, the conspiracy theorist also managed to include Barack Obama in the mix.
“The server is located in Ukraine. Can you say election interference? This is a deep state cybersecurity company. People this is a threat to national security. What did Trump officially receive yesterday? The account is in disarray.
Conspiracy theorists continue to accuse “in the Democratic Party,” while making some very confusing accusations that probably only someone very well-versed in the craziest right-wing lore would understand.
“Did you know by now that the vast amount of data collected by this outage will be provided directly to Donald Trump?” the tweet read, although it’s not entirely clear what that means. “People this has reached the highest levels of government. People are asking themselves, why is this all being announced just hours after Trump won the nomination at the RNC? Did he tell you on July 10th that finally The battle will take place in 7 days, right? Now look at all the events that have happened since you fell asleep.
People listen to me. If you think today isn’t big on a historical scale, let me introduce you to CrowdStrike. The server is located in Ukraine. Can you say election interference? This is a deep state cyber security company. People this is a threat to national security. What… https://t.co/YkqdEXJa34

As of this writing, the tweet has been viewed over 900,000 times on X, likely because it comes from an account with a blue checkmark. Before Musk bought Twitter, the blue checkmark was just a way to combat fakery. But Musk removed the checkmark from legacy accounts and now any idiot who spends $8 can get “verified” even though X doesn’t actually verify someone’s identity or reputation.
Leave the world behind with Obama
It wouldn’t be 2024 if no one mentioned Netflix movies leave the world behind. The account, Concerned Citizens, also posted a video on Friday seeking to show that Obama’s involvement in the film was evidence that he was hatching a plot to destroy the nation’s computer systems.
“Barack Obama made a movie called ‘Leave the World Behind’ in which an internet blackout plunges the entire world into chaos. It’s like they knew it,” the account tweeted.
“Am I watching a movie or a documentary?”
“2024 is going to be very chaotic”

Many other X users tried to spread the idea leave the world behind Actually a way to laugh at the world before some major destruction happens in the future, like Edward Farina Who wrote: “This movie shows how a cyberattack caused a blackout in the United States. #worldeconomicforum Network polygon. It was a warning of what was to come. Elites are evil. Dark Friday.
“The massive Microsoft outage happening right now is tied to Crowdstrike, the cybersecurity company hired by Hillary Clinton and the DNC to investigate alleged Russian violations of the DNC!” X user Liz Crokin tweeted on Friday arts.
Crowdstrike has deployed a fix, and Microsoft has been sending instructions on how to get Windows PCs back up and running, including a bizarre suggestion that users try turning the PC on and off again… 15 times. No one knows exactly when life will return to normal for everyone. But one thing we can say for sure is that this blackout was not caused by Barack Obama or any other Trump-sabotaging politician. Given Trump’s commitment to an extreme program based on neo-fascist ideas, there are many good reasons to try to undermine Trump’s agenda. But destroying major computer systems around the world would be a very foolish approach.
