Although it is new Asterix With a year to go before the album’s release, comics (known locally as bande dessinée, or BD) remain firmly among the best-selling books in France, with 11 books cracking the top 50 bestseller lists for 2024. France is one of the largest comics markets in the world, with BDs and comics regularly breaking bestseller lists. Yet comics appear to be performing less strongly than in recent years. In the three-year period from 2021 to 2023, a comic ranked first in the overall top 50, with 2023 being a particularly outstanding year and two of the comics being the latest Asterix and the first new continuation album Andre Franconbeloved Gaston Le Gav The series grabbed the first and second spots. Although this record has ended, there are still 11 books in the top 50 bestsellers in France (corresponding to 2023).

The best-selling comics this year are French comics (manfra) instinctby Inoxtag, Basile Monnot and Charles Compain. By the end of the year, the comic was reported to have sold 320,000 copies, making it France’s strongest comic debut – selling 67,000 copies in its first four days. The title was released on November 21, and much of its success can be attributed to French YouTuber Inoxtag (real name Ines Benazoz) has more than 8.8 million followers on the platform.
Although it did not crack the French top 50 bestseller list, the latest Asterix Album – 2023s white iris (Asterix and the White Lotus English) by Fabricaro and Didier ConradAs the number one best-selling comic in France that year, it still maintained stable sales in 2024 and successfully ranked among the top 10 best-selling sub-categories. Mortel Adele A best-selling series for many years, it has once again proven its status by taking four spots in the top 10 of the “Bande Dessinée” charts, including the top spot for the latest volume Mortelle Adèle Volume 21 RecréAction Générale!. The series’ other placements in the BD top 10 include #5 (Mortelle Adèle follows in the footsteps of croquettes!/’Mortelle Adèle on the trail of monsters‘); #8(Mortelle Adèle Volume 20: I’m in the midst of a serious apocalypse!/’severe end of the world‘) and #9 (Mortal Adele and the Relics of the Moon Cat/’Mortell Adele and the Relics of the Mooncat‘). The first book is based on interviews with his brother and recounts the events in the Satouf series from his brother’s perspective. It ranks seventh. First published in October 2022, the book’s continued and steady sales success can be attributed to a strong public marketing campaign (including large posters on the Paris Metro) and the regular presence of Israel and its Gaza war in the global news cycle . It only entered the top 10 of the BD charts in 2023, but last year it entered both the top 10 of comics and the top 50 of books (at No. 49). It ranked eleventh on the book sales charts, so it didn’t make the top ten. Abrams ComicArts plans to launch an English version in May 2025.

Half of the top ten French comics rankings in 2024 are by Eiichiro Odaof one piece. The latest two volumes and the first three volumes of the French edition published by Glénat were among the best-selling comics in France last year, ranking 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th and 10th. It – arguably for comics purists – ranks second behind Inoxtag et al.’s Manfra instinct. Other comics in the top 10 are the latest volumes of Shōnen Endo Tatsuyaof spy x family Volume 12 (#3), Horikoshi Koheiof My Hero Academia Volume 38 (#7) next to Akira Toriyama & Toyotaroof Dragon Ball Super Volume 21 (#9) – The last volume Toriyama participated in before his death in March 2024.
