In short, this week’s list of the best comics to buy for October 23rd is simply ridiculous. I don’t track these things, but I seriously suspect this is the hardest week I’ve ever had to pair a new release with five recommendations. I could have easily made a second five list that included things like Iron Man #1, Superman #19, Ninja Turtles #3, And more are difficult to cut. But cuts had to be made, so I did. Below you’ll find my top five picks, along with the usual list of releases…enjoy!
The most worth buying comics on October 23
Absolute Wonder Woman #1
writer: Kelly Thompson
artist: Hayden Sherman
Colorist: Jody Bellaire
Writer: Becca Kelly
Publisher: DC Comics
No island paradise…no sisterhood that shaped her…no peace mission…what’s left is an absolute Amazon!
Why it’s cool: I’ll be writing a full review of the book tomorrow for our DC Round-Up column, but I think, in a nutshell, this first issue is cool because artist Hayden Sherman finally has a role in a high-profile book China shines brightly. Sherman has been upgrading every project they draw for a while now (have you all read that? Dark Space: Dungeon? So cool…), now they can showcase their work on a huge stage. The results are epic. If you like fun page layouts and eye-catching comic art, this book is a must-read.

Godzilla Monster Theater #1
Writer/Artist/Writer: Tom Shorey
Publisher: IDW Press
Godzilla takes on his greatest enemy yet – The Great Gatsby! In 1922, mysterious extravagant man Jay Gatsby throws lavish parties at his palatial Long Island estate, all to attract the attention of his love, Daisy Buchanan. But his love affair is interrupted when his team attracts something more dangerous than love: Godzilla. Now, Gatsby has no choice but to give up his love for Daisy and instead seek revenge on the monster that destroyed his home. The green light will be broken. Boats will continue to swim upstream.
Why it’s cool: I don’t even know where to start. This book is a leading contender for Comic of the Year. The first of three extra-large issues, it’s smart, informative and fast-moving. It references F. Scott Fitzgerald on one page and the android Jules Verne on another (spoiler). It’s a well-told story that knows by the end that fun is the name of the game. I like it.

Hello Dark #4
Creator: Sean Patrick Boyd, Michael W. Conrad, Garth Ennis, Elijah Henry, John J. Pearson, Becky Cloonan, Jason Wardy, Lola Bonato, Tamra Bonvillain, Chloe Brailsford, Robert Hack, Tyler Esposito and Pat Brosseau
Publisher: Prosperity! studio
In the next installment of this groundbreaking horror anthology, the industry’s top creators In the Darkest Hour, Garth Ennis and Becky Cloonan reveal Part 4 of The War, two couples fighting for their lives in New York City Fighting for survival, but it’s not just the world around them that is crumbling as the long nights lengthen.
Why it’s cool: This is a strong anthology comic from start to finish, but what makes it stand out above the excellent comics coming out this week are the contributions of Garth Ennis, Becky Cloonan, Tamra Bonvillain, and Pat. The incredibly scary and disturbing ongoing story Brosseau tells. title war This is one of the most grounded horror comics you’ll read all year, and it feels so real that it reaches an unsettling degree that makes you think about it regularly between issues. Really, don’t miss it.
price: $5.99
Paranoid Garden #4
writer: Gerald Way and Sean Simon
artist: Chris Weston
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Writer: Nate Pickos
Publisher: dark horse comics
Lou broke the rules during the garden’s trial period as many residents began to fall ill, including the building itself. While her healing powers seem to temporarily help repair things, they may not be enough to stop forces outside the Garden from wreaking havoc.
Why it’s cool: This is an excellent comic and no panel is wasted. Everything here is so spot on and so interesting, right from the beginning of the story. I won’t spoil it, but this issue brings the high concept back just enough to end with a beat that recontextualizes everything that came before in a very profound way. I’ve said this explicitly a few times in this area, but I loved this book.
price: $4.99
Power Fantasy #3
writer: Kieron Gillen
artist: Caspar Weingard
Writer: Clayton Cowles
