Colin Farrow’s look in ‘Penguins’ is surprisingly cartoon-inspired

Matt Reeves’ Batman universe is far from a goofy world, but apparently one of the inspirations for the Penguin look was on the sillier side.

If you didn’t know, Colin Farrell’s performance in “Penguin” is generally different from his performance. No, it’s done by something called special effects makeup, and although it’s hard to believe, it apparently changes the actor in a way that you probably wouldn’t know it was him unless someone told you. There’s clearly a hint of the mafia in his designs, but it turns out that’s not necessarily the first port of call when looking for inspiration for his looks. In a recent interview with DiscussingFilm, Penguin makeup designer Michael Marino said Bob Hoskins from Who Framed Roger Rabbit was some of the inspiration when designing the character .

“There’s another fantasy character, Bob Hoskins from The Movie. [Who Framed] Roger Rabbit,” Marino said in the interview. “Matt has a quality about him. [Reeves] Be interested in things I think are cool. But it also comes from a noir feel, a ’30s type of person, because in “Roger Rabbit” you really don’t know what decade it was. It’s a weird 1930s, 1940s feel, so I think the black stuff comes from that. And then there were the real gangsters, we had Al Capone, who was also influential. It’s all these subconscious images and references [that] They are all integrated into the subconscious of this character.

McMarino told us that Colin Farrow’s look as the Penguin was also inspired by Bob Hoskins in Who Framed Roger Rabbit

It’s a pretty fun movie, especially when the Penguin changed his name a bit (from Oswald Cobblepot to Ozzie Cobb) to make sure Batman felt more “grounded”, but I Think it’s more about looks than performance.

The sequel to The Batman is currently in production and was originally scheduled to be released almost a year later, but was delayed earlier this year, so it will now be released on October 2, 2026.
