There is this strange misconception that art can only come from pre-approved spaces and groups that respect Canon and tradition. Classical music is related to Chopin and Beethoven. Opera should mainly cover such classics Traviata and Troubadour. This idea can even influence how some music fans view more modern work. This is either an old method or an old method. Now imagine throwing a huge wrench in the form of video games and anime music concerts with orchestral arrangements, gameplay/animation plot. What this is town HallArt Director Mela Fay Bringing space for historical events in New York. Her vision has paved the way for a diverse and bold future.
Under Araya, the City Hall has opened to popular musical achievements in popular culture. Star Valley,,,,, Final Fantasy,,,,, Denim Bebop, recent Shovel Knight All were treated with orchestral music (some threw electric guitars into the mixture). These shows will not only give the pop culture community representatives the recognition deserve. They also become statements of art, and how big our network should be when it is often retained in places where it is called “higher art.”

Araya, who also served as archivist and actor himself, hopes to invite more to learn about the music industry to understand the benefits of inclusion, rather than the exclusivity of the types of performances that the hall should be open. For example, upcoming programming includes Tokyo Ghost and Lord of the Rings Concerts and a complete jazz concert led by legendary composer and songwriter Yoko Kannofrom her choice Denim Bebop Work.
This all points to creating something special. Under Araya, pop culture and media music have found a very enthusiastic home in the hall, which is adding a strong new branch to an already impressive legacy. At this point, this is an open challenge to the art world. Embrace culture, embrace nerdom, embrace destruction. Beautiful things can sprout from it.
Beat Sit down with Araya and talk about video games, anime and movies, and the meaning of commemorating different forms of art that blend to create experiences we like and cherish. Here is it.
Ricardo Serrano: It can be said that the vision of the Town Hall is “the hall for everyone.” How will video game music concert fit into this framework?
MeCounday: This idea came through my own love for anime music. I’m not a huge gamer and although I love gaming music, I think it’s my journey from wanting to celebrate 25th anniversary of the founding of Cowboy Bebop. So we did it at a special concert, which was great and fun. Being involved and watching media music in general makes me think in video game music.
Some of the most interesting composers are trying out games and anime, and the numbers are growing. For me, it’s about “let’s take that seriously.” If Japanese and American companies pay amazing artists to make great music, why shouldn’t we give them room to show their work? This kind of music accompanys people’s daily lives. There is too much emotional attachment there. It’s obvious Denim Bebop Concert, this is their first instrumental concert. Knowing that we’re going to let people try different things because what we offer is really exciting for me.
Serrano: Do you see these pop culture events causing overlap in audiences? Have fans of classical music brought video game concerts into video game concerts and vice versa?
Alaya: We have some recurring visitors who come to attend through one of our first concerts Star Valleyand then found in the hall, staying in the hall for a long time. But we found that classical musicians also liked these video game concerts, which wasn’t a weird idea.
I remember convinced a relative that it was a season ticket for the Metropolitan Concert Final Fantasy concert. The music impressed her because she could appreciate its classical style, even for something more modern. She couldn’t believe it was used in video games. It was interesting to see this from her perspective, especially to hear her talk about the level of access to music, except for similarities she already knows.
Serrano: Town Hall seems to promote a sense of versatility in terms of its truly great product. Just here Shovel Knight Concert, you have a chamber opera performance, participating in the debates between the famous James Baldwin and William F. Buckley. Tongue and eyelashes and return to civil discourse. It’s the top of the comedy show, journalist dialogue and musician spotlight. How can all these different performances challenge, perhaps the role of the art world?
Alaya: The City Hall is distributed between the visiting host and the City Hall gift program, which is my job. I think there is often overlap, and some presenters fit our plans and vice versa. For example, Philip Glass It debuted at the City Hall 50 years ago. We just celebrated last year. We went with his film scores when the hall held many events focused on Grass. We make sure it is part of the celebration. This shows how versatile we are here, and how many avenues can accommodate a variety of music and performances.
I’m going to say that expanding this serious concert music canon is our goal. It’s not just media music. This is also a genre. Two years ago, we Twinkie Clarkhe is considered the greatest gospel composer and writer. Overall, the Gospel is not really done in many places in New York, even though it is one of the most popular acts ever. She is a genius and making her performances as important as celebrating for us Denim Bebop A complete concert is held. Again, it’s all about expanding Canon and creating experiences that aren’t seen anywhere else.
It’s also about creating something that others can’t see. If people call it a niche, that won’t upset me. There are enough nerds.

Serrano: Do you think there should be a bigger interest in concept, form, sound or history in Town Hall? You want to explore more things like what you call gospel music.
Alaya: Well, the acoustics of human sounds in our hall have just come out. Opera, for example, sounds better than anything else. It’s just made to speak and sing, and of course, it’s good for acoustic music and everything else. My dream is to bring the Vocal Series to a truly celebrate the voice of humanity and different types of singing around the world. Not only Western classical or American pop music.
Another big thing I’ve been doing, hoping to roll the ball over the next few seasons, which is the focus of Girls’ Generation. Look, I’ve grown up the Beatles Overall. But I realized that without a teenage girl, you wouldn’t even be this White album, Correct? It was the teenage girls who brought them to the United States, their passionate demand for them.
It’s a different way for girls to express themselves, especially in how they use their deep love for different arts to exert creativity. This is a concept I’ve been trying to develop over the past few years. I hope it will really come true in the next two years. It will include anime, comfortable games, fanaticism and girls’ groups. It’s big, wide and very exciting.
