Thanks to the Eternals in Captain America: Brave New World, adamantium comes to the Marvel Universe. If you’ve ever been a Marvel Comics fan, you’ll know why this is big news. The fictional metal vibranium has been a core element of the Marvel Universe since Captain America’s shield first appeared, but that’s because Marvel’s most famous metal belongs to a character they couldn’t use at the time.
As part of Marvel Studios’ larger group at San Diego Comic-Con, the studio is talking about the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World. Among the many details shared in panels and trailers, this one stands out: Adamantium is coming to the MCU.
In Marvel comics, adamantium is the king of sci-fi metal. Captain America’s shield is made of materials from the books, as is the body of Ultron (the main antagonist in Avengers: Age of Ultron). But adamantium is best known as the material on the skeleton of Marvel’s most famous and profitable mutant, Wolverine.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this introduction is the source. In the 2021 film The Eternals, adamantium is first discovered in the solidified form of a celestial body rising from Earth in the South Pacific. This is one of those if not this The Celestials are mentioned for the first time since the movie’s release, aside from Easter eggs such as “a giant statue of a man sticking out of the ocean” mentioned in She-Hulk.
For many years, the X-Men and all mutants (including Wolverine) were owned by 20th Century Fox. The X-Men returned to Marvel a few years ago following Disney’s acquisition, and Wolverine made his debut in the just-released Deadpool vs. Wolverine movie.
It’s easy to assume, then, that “Deadpool and Wolverine” is introducing adamantium into the MCU. But “Deadpool and Wolverine” isn’t exactly the same as the mainline movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It serves as a bridge of sorts between Fox and Marvel Studios films, and takes place on an Earth other than Earth-616, Marvel’s main canonical Earth. Wolverine from that movie won’t be introduced into the Marvel Universe either. As such, this marks Metallica’s official introduction to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe – setting the stage for Marvel Studios to reimagine the grumpy X-Men and have him “sniff” with his iconic claws for the first time.
Captain America: Brave New World stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America and introduces Giancarlo Esposito as the leader of the Serpent Society and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” ·Ross.
