If you’ve recently booted up the mobile version of Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7, or Village and found that you can’t play the game without an Internet connection, you’re not alone.
It’s common for many mobile games to require an internet connection, especially gacha games, which run checks to make sure you’re not cheating, but single-player games rarely require an internet connection. In addition to what some fans have discovered online, recent updates to the iOS versions of Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7, and Village all require an Internet connection when launching the game. “Due to changes in the launch process, launching this application now requires an Internet connection,” each game’s update notes read.

This is obviously a completely strange choice, with users on Reddit suggesting this could be because of data collection or DRM checking, although that’s just speculation and it’s an odd thing to do on the latter point considering how many single-player games there are Things game does not require you to be connected to the internet. Many other users on Reddit have also expressed a desire to request refunds under this change, but considering how many people have reportedly purchased the games, there probably won’t be that many people anyway.
Back in July, store data from Appmagic (via Mobilegamer.biz) estimated that the iOS version of Resident Evil 7 had sold around 2,000 copies, significantly lower than higher. These aren’t the only mobile ports of big AAA games that haven’t sold well, so there really doesn’t seem to be much of a market for these types of games, especially considering they cost as much as they cost on consoles. It’s not going to be helpful if you only use a touch screen to play games, so it’s probably best to stick with a console or PC.
