Look, the vast majority of you 16-24 year olds (and, let’s be honest, older folks too) can’t afford a mortgage. But thanks to a new promotion in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, one lucky player will be able to net £100,000 to buy their first house as part of a safe house challenge.
This safehouse challenge starts today and revolves around several influencers competing in their own dedicated safehouses. Players can only vote for who they think will win, and one of the people who voted for the correct winner will take home the top prize. It’s like a game show, but requires a hefty house deposit.

That £100,000 isn’t all you get either. Activision Blizzard will pay an additional fee to organize your new game room (although the price has not yet been firmly determined), as well as the legal costs of actually purchasing the home. This is certainly a huge award, and I think a lot of hopeful homeowners will be eager to give it a try.
In the official press release for the promotion, there’s a statistic that makes me personally heartbroken: “To mark the launch of the game, Call of Duty is giving away £100,000 for people to buy their own safe house. The £100,000 bonus will cover standard house prices in 1991 (£57,959)*, additional renovation costs, legal costs and solicitor fees 46% of 18-24 year olds** fear they will never be able to afford their own home. More than just a lump sum of money; it was a lifeline and a solid boost to their own ‘safe house’.
The standard house price in 1991 was £57,959? Man, I’m pissed. The current average price of a house is £282,000. This is wild and infuriating! It’s also important to note that this means that even if you’re the lucky winner of the money, you may still have over £100,000 to pay off your new home. So, if you want to work hard to make money, you might be able to find a job at the same time.
Still, the funding is eye-popping for one of the most anticipated games of the year. So if you’re a CoD fan like me and don’t have a mortgage yet, go for it. If you don’t win, you can always ease your grief by spending money on in-game currency. Of course, this would be the healthy thing to do (it’s not).
